Steal This Idea! - Government Edition

Cathilea Robinett, Executive Vice President, Center for Digital Government - Center for Digital Education

Information Technology is a daunting challenge in the best of times, and it is even more difficult today as governments face tightening finances and diminishing revenues. Under such circumstances, the smart thing to do is look for opportunities to borrow ideas from other jurisdictions who have demonstrated savings of time and money in solving major service delivery challenges. But where to look? There are 94,731 city, county and state governments across our nation. This fascinating session provides - at a pace not unlike a 3-day tour of Europe - the best of hundreds of nominees and dozens of winners from the Center for Digital Government's intensive national surveys of best and emerging practices in the public sector IT community. Be prepared to borrow an idea... or 10.

Customer-Aligned Decision Making
Room 310

In today's challenging economic climate, you cannot afford to make strategic decisions that are not tightly aligned to delivering the highest value to your customers. Innovating government services with GIS, eRetention, Mobile Computing, and Green Technology open up new opportunities for the public sector to deliver higher value. However, without knowing your ultimate customer and directly aligning your strategy to their needs, your technology projects may fall short. This strategic session will take a look at the complex value network (who is your customer's customer) that is active within government services. Attendees will walk away with a model for customer-aligned decision making.

Presenter: Brian Lee, Senior Chief Principal, Organization Change Management, Delegata

Mike Havey, Chief, Accounting & Reporting Division, State Controller's Office

Bill Stobie, Technology Advisor to the Director, CJIS Division, Department of Justice

The life-changing conveniences offered by technology are balanced by the trials and tribulations of securing the systems. The ever-increasing use of wireless and mobile devices only adds to the challenge. This session looks at the latest tools, standards and solutions for assessing your environments vulnerabilities, shoring up defenses and avoiding the type of internal security incidents that we have been reading about all too often.

Green Technology and Sustainability
Room 311

In our world of finite resources, environmental responsibility has never been more important than it is today. While today's government leaders know this, it can be difficult to develop programs that bring about real change. Yet technology also holds the promise of more energy efficient IT environments, greener buildings, and less travel requirements through telecommuting. What role does technology play in creating a greener government? This session looks "beyond the data center" regarding these issues and provides thought-provoking ideas on how government and technology leaders need to rethink technology's role in a greener future.

Presenters: Shell Culp, CIO, California Department of Toxic Substances

Stacy Schwarz-Gardner, EVP of Technical Marketing & Emerging Technologies, Integrated Archive Systems

Maryam Alexandrian, Senior VP, WW Sales and Channels, Wyse Technology

eDiscovery and eRetention
Room 305

As paperless government becomes a reality, the challenge of determining what to save and what to throw away becomes more complex. Managing the growing volume of electronic records is made even more complex by the legal and organizational rules which govern retention. Which types of electronic records must be retained? How long must they be kept? What does it mean to retain a record in the digital realm? Understanding the legal and organizational implication of erecords management is crucial. This session focuses on current technologies and best practices.

Presenters: Greg Trosset, Electronic Records Program Project Manager, King County, Archives and Records Management Section

Gary Rodgers, WW Public Sector & Education, Market Development, Image and Printing Group, Hewlett-Packard
