Leadership in Tough Times: What Will You Do?

Jerry Mechling, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

In today's economic climate, your biggest decision is whether to hunker down or to use the crisis for game-changing innovations. Where can you find the support and resources needed to make things happen? In this timely Keynote address, nationally recognized author, researcher and Harvard faculty member Jerry Mechling uses University research to create a framework for IT leadership with a focus on developing an action agenda for the challenges ahead.

Governing in the Cloud - New Service Models

Cloud computing, shared services and software as a service are gaining renewed interest as jurisdictions seek to get the most out of shrinking budgets. Come hear about the state of the technology for these models, and how governments are using these service models to gain access to the IT services and computing power needed to run a 21st century government.

Government on the Go - Preparing for Telework

As the traditional workplace culture changes, the demand for anytime/anyplace work environments seems to be growing exponentially. Telework is cited as a solution for everything from disaster response to attracting a new generation of public servants to global warming. In tough economic times, telework can also be an important cost-saving strategy. Yet in practice, jurisdictions have been slow to implement it. This session will highlight some successful programs, the innovative technology used to implement telework, and provide tips and tricks for creating a telework program.

Data Identification and Classification

Gone are the Wild West days of data management. The demands for information exchange, the threats of compromise and the legal and policy mandates for protecting data are all driving governments to come up with a better approach. Organizations must identify the data they are collecting, classify that data, and develop strategies to share, protect, consolidate and analyze it. This session covers some of the methods and tools for identifying, classifying and protecting data.

The Art of Ironman Success

Mark Allen, 6-Time World Champion, Ironman Triathlon

In Government IT today, success - or even holding on for dear life - requires great toughness, endurance and resiliency. Who better to inspire us than the man who is arguably the most successful endurance athlete of our time? As a professional triathlete, Mark won 66 of the 96 races he entered, five consecutive Ironman World Championships (a record), and World Championship at age 37 (a record). These achievements did not come easy. In this fascinating Keynote address, Mark shares the principles that enabled him to turn devastating setbacks into historic triumphs; principles each of us can use to achieve the highest levels of success in our personal and professional lives.

The Future of Mobile Technology

Research and development are booming in the wireless arena, exploring such issues as: What are the infrastructures of the future? What new devices, tools and applications have the most potential to impact government operations and services? What about security concerns? This session provides a glimpse at emerging trends and technologies in perhaps the fastest growing segment of technology today.

Governing in a 2.0 World

Increasingly, governments are being called upon to make services more accessible to citizens, serve an aging population, replace a deteriorating infrastructure, keep communities safe, and to do so in a sustainable way. This session will cover the expectations of the next generation of citizens and provide examples of how governments across the nation are using these tools to connect with citizens and govern in a whole new way.

Russell Haddock, Senior Account Executive, MCCi, a Laserfiche Value Added Reseller

Security and Privacy in a See-through World

The federal economic stimulus package will require unprecedented accountability reporting at all levels of government. The guiding principle is that information maintained by government is a public asset, and whatever data you are storing may have value to the public. The ramifications on IT systems, policies and personnel can be significant. How must governments balance these reporting requirements with existing mandates to protect information and privacy? What are some important security compliance issues that need to be addressed? This session discusses current views about information control in order to find an acceptable balance between security, privacy and the public's right to know.

IT Governance - Portfolio and Project Management

One of the hottest topics nationwide is how to create an effective and economical IT governance structure. Every government organization faces a similar set of problems: how to strike the right balance between centralization and decentralization; how to ensure fair representation and engagement; how to evaluate investments; and, above all, how to organize and manage it all. This session discusses these issues and other keys to IT governance, including best practices and lessons learned.

Walter Kisner, Account Manager, Business Development, CedarCrestone, Inc. (on behalf of CA, Inc.)

Cost-Effective Strategies for Infrastructure Modernization

Modernization of legacy systems is not a luxury for better times. It is actually one of the most important enablers to improving the operational efficiencies that directly impact the ability to do more with less. Gone are the days when monies could be wasted on platform migration. Today's mainframe systems have been transformed into dynamic infrastructures that seamlessly integrate with Service-Oriented Architectures. Still, there remains the question of cost. Organizations must identify strategies for more efficient use of mainframe capacity, particularly involving integration between core systems and new delivery channels. This session covers some of the methods and tools for mainframe modernization that can dramatically reduce costs while improving infrastructure flexibility.

Jeff Overton, Senior Manager, Shadow Product Marketing, DataDirect
