Former Federal CIO Steven VanRoekel Resigns From USAID

After a second short stint with USAID, VanRoekel announced he is stepping down to spend more time with his family.

Former federal CIO Steven VanRoekel resigned from his post as chief innovation officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) after just months with the agency. VanRoekel joined USAID in September to help fight Ebola in West Africa, and announced on March 19 that he has left to spend time with his family. USAID has not named a replacement.

He worked with government agencies in Africa to pursue the goals of the White House’s “Fighting Ebola Challenge,” which included identifying solutions to bring increased Internet connectivity and diagnostic technologies.

VanRoekel served as an executive director of USAID for four months in 2011, working on citizen and organizational engagement. During his time as federal CIO between Aug 2011 and late 2014, VanRoekel championed the White House’s open data initiative and launched a roadmap for mobile computing.

Colin wrote for Government Technology and Emergency Management from 2010 through most of 2016.
