Master plans for boosting use of solar panels have been prepared for 46 of the cities. The Indian government hopes to include another ten cities in the program, bringing the total to 60. Agra, Jaipur and Mysore are some of the other urban areas on the list.
As noted here, solar cities would aim for a 10-percent reduction in the use of conventional energy sources within five years. Participating cities would receive financial and technical assistance. Plans for solar cities in India have been in the works since 2009, according to the Times.
