New LED Tech Used in Municipal Buildings Is Navy-Approved

In July, the LED lighting creators received a $4.3 million contract to install LED lighting in municipal and school buildings in New Bedford, Mass.

(TNS) -- STAMFORD — Revolution Lighting Technologies has completed testing requirements that qualify its LED lighting tubes to be used by the U.S. Navy.

Revolution contracted with an independent testing laboratory to put the company’s 2-foot T8 LED tubes through tests in line with Navy guidelines, according to Revolution officials.

The completion of the testing means that Navy ships can purchase Revolution’s LED tubes through the Navy supply chain. Revolution officials said that they plan to pursue Navy contracts.

“We are very pleased with the successful outcome of these rigorous lighting tests, surpassing the absolute highest standards of performance and durability,” Robert LaPenta, CEO and Chairman of Revolution, said in a statement. “This achievement is a testament to the quality of our market-leading LED solutions. We look forward to delivering exceptional value and savings through cutting-edge LED lighting technology to the U.S. Navy and its counterparts around the world.”

Navy officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The benefits of the LED tubes for the Navy would include a 70,000-hour lamp life and 10-year warranty, Revolution officials said. The tubes are plastic and shatterproof and use 50 percent less wattage than fluorescent lights, according to Revolution officials.

The company’s LED tubes are also available to the international maritime market, including the cruise line industry.

Revolution has clinched several major deals in recent months. Last month, two divisions of the company were chosen as program contractors in utility Eversource’s Small Business Energy Advantage Program. That initiative is supposed to help small businesses with a peak energy demand of less than 200 kilowatts per month save money and provide affordable energy-efficient solutions to those firms.
