City Engineers Invent Safer Pedestrian Crossings

With federal permission, Phoenix installed the first of 89 HAWK crossings in 2000. In December, the federal government decided to include the crosswalks as an approved option in its manual for traffic engineers. At least 20 states have introduced HAWK systems.
