New Website Review: City of Los Angeles

February 13, 2013 By

The city of Los Angeles, Calif., announced a new website last week via a unique press conference on a Google Hangout. As a former city government Web manager, I was eager to see their new site! I put together this quick video review.

I gave the new city website props for a clean design, cool mega-menus and a neighborhood lookup tool. The site boasts many places for users to give their thoughts, so I figure they wouldn’t mind some candid feedback. I talked a lot in the video about “responsive design”, which I would have liked to see on Los Angeles’ site. I think any new government websites should consider their approach to responsive design as an important foundation.

Hear more of my thoughts in the video, and watch the end for a bonus anniversary montage – celebrating two years of fun in GovGirl videos!

Really like the comments in the video. It will help LA make the suggested changes and compete in the Best of the Web this fall. Wish us luck and that you for the positive comments in addition to the constructive comments.

Steve, great work. A project that is larger and more complex then anyone who hasn't done this before can not comprehend. Question...is this SharePoint or some other Content Management System? Kristy, great comments and insight. Our website redesign of mynevadacounty.com, eventhough launched over a year ago is being refined constantly. I am taking some of the great ideas of LA's site and will look to incorporate. Good luck on the mobile site. Since we use SharePoint we incorporated Mobile Entree which allowed us to launch our mobile version at the same time. This application is amazing and allows us to build in SharePoint and it does the rest! Nice Job All!

Happy V-Day Gov Girl - we love ya! Glad you can dance - Funkhouser needs some work though.

Totally agree with the comments on new video, including the difficulty with large government webpages, these can be nightmare projects to get right. Happy V-Day. Not sure how you know the Funk. He was our Mayor back here in KC, thought it was interesting to see him on the tail end of the vid. Funny ending. Keep up the good work.

It may be interesting to note that GovTech.com is not built with responsive design.

LOL. Eric, I was thinking the exact same thing. Nonetheless, great advise Gov Girl, you rock! Really.

Los Angeles' the #4 "DIRTIEST AMERICAN CITY" (Travel Leisure). If only the Mayor and Angelenos would all get together and bravely clean up the nasty, diesease-laden litter and solid wastes along streets, sidewalks and parks actoss the city!!!!
