Summary

The purpose of this program is to provide clinical research and enrichment activities for high school students from under-represented minorities in medicine, with the long-term goal of increasing the diversity of the biomedical research workforce. Funding through this program should be used to add a clinically relevant research exposure program for up to ten students per year, per institution. The students should be under-represented, minority students. Institutions receiving an award will identify a project director who will be responsible for managing the program and ensuring that students are matched with appropriate mentors. All proposed programs must fit in the DDCF's definition of clinical research. For the purposes of this program, "clinical research" is defined as: "scientific investigation into mechanisms of disease, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes, or health services that are conducted with human subjects, materials of human origin, or human populations". The program must build upon an existing program that offers research experiences to high school students in the setting of a university, medical school, or research institute to participate in this program, and the program must provide enrichment activities that help students develop the skills needed for clinical research, including but not limited to introduction to bioethics, protection of human subjects, scientific writing, and experimental design,.
