Clothilde Hewlett Named Interim Director of California DGS

California Gov. Gray Davis today announced the appointment of Clothilde V. Hewlett as interim director of the California Department of General Services.

Hewlett, 47, of San Francisco, has served as the undersecretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency since 1999. The State and Consumer Services Agency oversees 12 departments, including the Department of General Services. Prior to her appointment as undersecretary, Hewlett served as director of moral character determinations for the State Bar of California. In that capacity, she was responsible for the investigation and litigation of all applicants for admission to practice law in California based on moral character.

Hewlett is a former San Francisco police commissioner who served from 1992 to 1997. In that capacity, she reviewed and approved procedures for dignitary protection, intelligence and police officer involved shootings. Hewlett also served on the California Council on Criminal Justice and was chairperson of the Appeals Committee. She was a San Francisco assistant district attorney from 1980 to 1991 and served as a supervisor of the San Francisco Municipal Court Trial Division.

As a principal trial attorney, Hewlett successfully prosecuted juveniles who had committed serious crimes, and adult career criminals. Previously, she was a San Francisco District Attorney investigator.

Hewlett earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a juris doctorate degree from Boalt Hall Law School. She will receive a salary of $117,816. This appointment does not require Senate confirmation.
