Beyond Interoperability: The Changing Role of Technology in Effective Disaster Communications and Coordination

When disaster strikes, we have learned that communication and coordination are vital. Effective response requires not just interoperability between emergency responders, but also rapid and certain coordination between civilian agencies, as well as individual citizens and their families. That lesson was driven home by Hurricane Katrina.
