Jun 19, 2007, By Wayne Hanson
The Government Accountability Office today
released a report, that says while various efforts are under way to address privacy and security of a nationwide health information exchange, HHS is in the early stages and "has not yet defined an overall approach for integrating its various privacy-related initiatives and addressing key privacy principles, nor has it defined milestones for integrating the results of these activities."
The report highlights key challenges of protecting electronic personal health information that include:
- Understanding and resolving legal and policy issues.
- Ensuring appropriate disclosure.
- Ensuring individuals' rights to request access and amendments to health information.
