New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey signed an
Executive Order Tuesday regarding the Open Public Records Act. The governor's action was the result of collaborative negotiations between the administration and the New Jersey Press Association, as well as other open records advocates, including New Jersey Common Cause.
"This Executive Order addresses an issue that goes to the heart of making government more accessible to the citizens of New Jersey, making government more accountable, and giving government back to the people," said McGreevey.
"In recent weeks," said McGreevey, "we have worked closely with Attorney General Samson, the New Jersey Press Association, editors of New Jersey's leading newspapers, and public interest groups such as Common Cause and NJ FOG to review the Executive Order and the proposals made by state agencies. Throughout this process, we struck a balance between the need for open government and the need to ensure the safety and security of our citizens."
