The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T Directorate) released a test report on a new portable explosives trace detector, the XD-2i.  Testing was conducted at the DHS S&T Transportation Security Lab (TSL) and the final test report (DHS/STD/TSL-08/02) is available to recognized government and military agencies.

The Transportation Security Laboratory is a Department of Homeland Security Federal Laboratory located at the William J. Hughes Technical Center, Atlantic City International Airport, New Jersey, and is a part of the Science and Technology Directorate of DHS.  Their core mission is to enhance homeland security by performing research, development and validation of solutions to detect and mitigate the threat of improvised explosive devices.

The XD-2i, explosives trace detector is a field operable explosives detection device requiring no warm up time, no calibration, no downtime after explosives are detected, and minimal operator training.  Reliable detection of commercial, homemade, and military explosives in varying environmental conditions like extreme heat, high humidity, elevated altitudes, and desert terrain are additional benefits of the XD-2i.

Field testing of the XD-2i is currently being conducted by county, state, and federal agencies, their bomb squads, and K9 support teams.  Detection of explosives, the weapon of choice for terrorists, remains a top priority to protect warfighters, civilians, critical infrastructure and high profile assets from improvised explosives devices.

Government agencies wanting to review the DHS test report will be provided a direct contact at the DHS TSL to obtain a copy.  Corporations with explosives detection requirements should contact their state Office of Homeland Security to request performance verification of the XD-2i.  Demonstrations will be coordinated upon request.
