  • The fires generally occurred in steep mountainous terrain that had a repeated history of wind-driven wildfires and lost structures.
  • All of the fires spread rapidly and occurred during a seasonal drought that caused critical levels of live and dead "fuel moistures," which is the moisture content of dead and downed woody surfaces. The change in moisture content throughout the day of these woody surfaces is critical to calculating the changes in fire behavior, according to Fire.org.
  • Enhancements to "conflagration phenomena" occurred in each of the fires immediately following the ignition of numerous structures. Conflagrations are large, fast-moving wildfires that exhibit many or all of the features associated with extreme fire behavior. In catastrophic interface fires, the conflagration worsens as soon as the fire begins consuming structures. The enhancement included: extreme burning intensity, fire whirls, long-range heavy spotting, mass ignition, high-energy release and rapid spreading rates.
