May 6, 2003, News Report

The United States Federal Communications Commission issued a Notice of Inquiry seeking public comment on using existing electrical power lines to provide Internet and broadband services to homes and offices. Broadband over Power Line (BPL) can provide consumers with the freedom to access broadband services from any room in the house without adding or paying for additional connections by simply plugging a BPL device into an existing electrical outlet. BPL may be able to provide an additional means for "last-mile" delivery of broadband services and may offer a competitive alternative to digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modem services.
