Former FCC Chairmen to Discuss Cross-Partisan Agenda for Telecom Policy

Aug 27, 2008, News Report

William Kennard and Michael Powell, a Democratic and a Republican former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, will speak on "Consensus FCC Reforms and the Communications Agenda for the Next Administration" next month.

Kennard and Powell will speak about a "cross-partisan agenda for telecommunications policy reforms" at the event of the Information Economy Project at George Mason University School of Law.

Kennard and Powell will be preceded by top former officials responsible for the agency's agenda, structure, and day-by-day operations. The program will be held at the National Press Club on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at 8:30 a.m.

"Despite controversies swirling over issues such as network neutrality, media ownership and universal service, a range of reforms may attract bi-partisan consensus," said Thomas W. Hazlett, professor of law and economics at George Mason University School of Law, and director of the Information Economy Project.

"These opportunities may be more likely to be realized if identified prior to the November 2008 election," said Hazlett.

The mini-conference on consensus FCC reforms is just the first of a series of programs that will be hosted by the Information Economy Project in the fall of 2008.
