Have you ever been on your laptop in public only to find someone peering at your screen? There's an easy and economical way to protect your precious data from these nosey parkers -- a privacy filter.

3M's privacy filter is designed with microlouver technology that blocks peripheral vision, making it impossible for anyone not directly in front of your computer to see what's on your screen. The filter's darkened design impedes wandering eyes, has no glare and emits low light.

My 3M privacy filter was easy to install, taking all of three minutes. The filters are either framed or frameless and come in various sizes. I recommend a frameless filter since it won't cover any buttons on your monitor, and be aware it takes awhile for your eyes to adjust to the low light.

Privacy filters are ideal for agencies that must comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Gramm-Bliley-Leach Act, and for professionals who travel in public spaces or those who work in high-traffic areas.

Specs:

  • Framed lightweight privacy filters for desktop LCDs only
  • Filter viewing area: 10 15/16 by 13 5/8 inches
  • Filter viewing area (diagonal) 17 3/8 inches
  • Fits 17-inch standard LCD monitors
  • Available sizes: 12.1 to 22 inches standard and widescreen
  • Price: $40 and up

Rating: 4 out of 5
