ChicagoCrime.org was the second place winner for best mashup at MashupCamp, an unconference.

Dan Farber said on Between the Lines: "ChicagoCrime.org mashes up Google Maps and a database of crime information for Chicago. You can search by route, ward, street, police beat and other parameters, and even show wanted poster connected to crimes in the database. This kind of e-government mashup will become pervasive in metropolitan areas, giving citizens, not just the civilian and government authorities, access to data."

Definitions:

Mashup: "A mashup is a website or web application that seamlessly combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience. Content used in mashups is typically sourced from a third party via a public interface or API. Other methods of sourcing content for mashups include Web feeds (e.g. RSS or Atom) and JavaScript includes. The etymology of this term almost certainly derives from its similar use in pop music. Many people are experimenting with mashups using eBay, Amazon, Google, and Yahoos APIs."

Unconference: "An unconference is a conference where the content of the meeting is driven and created by the attendees rather than by a single organizer. The term was used by Lenn Pryor when discussing BloggerCon but popularized by Dave Winer, the organizer of BloggerCon, in an April 2004 writeup. However it already appeared in the last century, as can be seen from this announcement for the annual XML developers' conference in 1998." KW
