Governor Rell Offers Tips to Connecticut Veterans For Identity Theft
May 25, 2006, News Report
Governor M. Jodi Rell offered tips to Connecticut's 280,000 veterans on how to protect their privacy and credit information in response to the recently disclosed theft of personal data from the U.S. Veterans Administration.
At no cost at all, there is an easy step to prevent an identity thief from opening any accounts in your name: "Place a fraud alert on your credit report," Governor Rell said.
"An initial fraud alert is a consumer statement that gets added to your credit file and lasts for 90 days. It alerts creditors of possible fraudulent activity and requests that they contact you prior to establishing credit in your name."
To assist Connecticutˇ¦s veterans in protecting themselves from any instances of identity theft, Governor Rell on Tuesday directed:
- A special Identity Theft Information Team composed of staff from the Departments of Consumer Protection, Public Safety, Banking and Veterans Affairs to conduct identity theft prevention seminars for veterans throughout the state on how to monitor financial accounts, credit reports and correct any erroneous information. They will be asked to meet with veterans through the VFW, American Legion and other veteransˇ¦ service organizations.
- A special section of the stateˇ¦s website (www.ct.gov) devoted to helping veterans with monitoring their financial and credit identity will be developed and posted.
- Distribution of the latest federal and state resources for assistance with identity theft issues to veteransˇ¦ groups throughout the state for distribution to their members.
