Larimer County Virtualizes for More Data Center Flexibility

Virtualization helps county IT division deliver services faster and more cost effectively.

Summary:

Larimer County’s IT Division is tasked with providing services to a demanding user base on a limited budget. Located in north central Colorado, Larimer’s IT Division provides IT services to county agencies across multiple campuses in three different urban areas. It supports more than 1,600 employees who in turn serve 293,000 county residents.

In the past, delivering data center services was a challenge due mostly to the lengthy assessment process for purchasing new hardware, said Steve Schneider, Infrastructure Group manager for Larimer County. Some projects would end in the design phase because of the infrastructure costs associated with purchasing proof-ofconcept equipment.

“We had to make sure the specifications we were getting were accurate and that they either weren’t too high or too low,” Schneider said. “If they were too low, performance of the equipment would suffer from the start. If they were too high, we were spending more money than we should be.”
