Mississippi Information Technology Services (ITS) recently began the process of migrating from a statewide point-to-point proprietary network to a frame-relay switched backbone network that can support multiple protocols, such as Internet Protocol (IP), Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) protocol and the System Network Architecture (SNA) protocol. The new network ITS chose is Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). This network facilitates the convergence of data, video and voice applications over a common transport while providing incremental bandwidth increases to maintain a high quality of service.
The migration process is being executed in three phases. The first phase of the ATM migration progressed over a 10-week period with only a few problems. The second and third phases will be conducted over the coming months. The primary goal is to execute the migration with little or no interruption of services.
