A Roadmap for Successful Grants Management System Implementation in the Public Sector

Managing grants is a critical function for most public entities. Some, such as HUD, FEMA, the Department of Education or the Department of Health, are supplying grants to other entities, and need an efficient tool to track distribution and usage. Other agencies receive grants and need to track and report on their usage, or manage further distribution to individuals or smaller agencies. All-to-often, agencies are manually tracking these complex grant distributions with Excel spreadsheets resulting in incomplete data.

Implementing a Grants Management System (GMS) will dramatically improve the efficiency, transparency and compliance of an organization, and will provide a great return on investment to taxpayers. However, the process can often be overwhelming, and all-too-often involves bending to meet the capabilities of the software, rather than making sure the software works within an organization’s unique structure.
