Lifting the Security Burden: A Cybersecurity Strategy for the Public Sector

The increased use of enterprise technology, data management systems and e-government platforms, combined with deep budget cuts and mandates, is causing an ever-evolving security burden in government. Instead of being proactive about managing risk and protecting critical information and technology assets, government has been more likely to address IT security in a reactive, as-needed manner. This issue brief will summarize the security threats and challenges faced by state and local governments. It introduces basic guidelines for developing a comprehensive security strategy in spite of budgetary and staffing challenges. Finally, it provides best practices for effectively addressing these daunting cybersecurity issues.
