Internet users are increasingly moving to wireless connectivity and private industry is moving quickly to respond to this trend. Local and state government agencies are also moving in this direction with much interest in deploying municipal wireless networks. While several municipal wireless initiatives are well on the way, many communities struggle with what to do and how to do it. Questions regarding how to fund the initiative, who will be responsible for building and operating the network, where to begin deployment, and what assets are already available in the community are just a few of the issues that must be resolved. The following white paper outlines the drivers, approaches, and several success stories to serve as a launching pad for communities. To understand the drivers behind municipal wireless, it is useful to begin by recognizing the social and economic benefits that can be realized when local governments meet their residents where and how they live.
