For years, public safety officials have successfully turned to technology to help increase their effectiveness. Today is no different – and public safety is relying on technology even more in light of current resource constraints and ever-evolving threats. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications solutions, which take advantage of high-speed wireless networks, automatically share data with each other and with central command systems to give first responders the best available situational awareness information for achieving high levels of public safety. They also act as a force multiplier for agencies that have had to cut staff during challenging economic times. In this issue brief, the Center for Digital Government discusses how public safety agencies can use M2M to do more with fewer resources. It also offers steps on how to build a solid M2M strategy that is economical, reliable, secure and viable for the long term.
