A new generation of technologies that uses high-speed wireless networks to gather information, provide real-time communications and carry out a variety of actions that once only people could do is providing a much-needed solution for budget-strapped governments. By utilizing machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, agencies can boost efficiency, provider better services and in some cases even generate new revenue streams. In this issue brief, the Center for Digital Government discusses how state and local government agencies can use M2M to do more with fewer resources. It also offers steps on how to build a solid M2M strategy that is economical, reliable, secure and viable for the long term.
