When government agencies are facing fiscal constraints, they often focus their resources on programs and efforts that directly benefit constituents. IT spending on backend solutions – like enterprise content management or document management – is not always seen as a critical investment. No matter how stretched thin a government agency is, however, it still needs to continue to maintain records management and service requests for public documents. New document management solutions are providing an alternative to cash-strapped agencies. These solutions have the capacity to expand and adapt to fit agency needs for document capture, as well as the ability to manage records according to public demand and regulatory requirements. This Center for Digital Government issue brief identifies some of the key considerations leaders can make when investing in a document management solution and best practices for implementation.
