The work that suits government is a reflection of public policy priorities, external socio-economic conditions, and — as Tom Sawyer would remind us — the circumstances at a particular place and time. Identifying the work that suits government at this moment in history calls on public-sector leaders to look beyond long-held assumptions — even those which have served government well for decades — and consider new, seemingly novel or unorthodox behaviors that enable government to meet its responsibilities to the people it serves.
