The success of law enforcement in a community is typically judged on the visibility of officers on the street, the responsiveness of dispatch and services, and the reduction of crime and violence. It is not often measured by the reliability of filing systems, the upkeep of records or the ease in retrieving needed documents. However, paper management can be expensive and requires money and time that could otherwise be invested in public safety. Technology in law enforcement is helping this situation and is improving communication, data management and efficiency among law enforcement personnel and agencies. This Center for Digital Government issue brief shows how enterprise content management in particular enhances law enforcement by increasing situational awareness, reducing costs, providing efficiencies and improving security.
