Brief: Manatee County, Fla., Driving Tests Will Include Video Surveillance

Cameras will help meet state requirements for additional skills testing for questionable drivers.

(Tribune News Service) -- Driver license examiners at the Manatee County Tax Collector will begin using cameras fixed to the side of the vehicle when conducting road tests starting on March 3.

“The decision to employ this technology is driven, in part, by state requirements to perform the additional driving skills road testing for questionable drivers starting July first of this year,” said Tax Collector Ken Burton, Jr. “My staff has been researching various video and audio opportunities to assist in training and quality control. The timing is perfect and will allow us to raise our level of service to our constituents.”

Customers will have to sign a consent form for the video, which will be affixed to the passenger side windshield so it doesn't impede driver visibility. If the customer is a minor then his or her parent or guardian must also sign the consent form.

If the driver does not consent, he or she can contact Ault’s Driver Education Center at 941-355-4202 or visit flhsmv.gov for a complete listing of private providers who administer driving skills road tests.
