What milestone will Voyager 1, NASA's venerable spacecraft, soon reach?

December 8, 2011 By

Answer:

Voyager 1 will soon be the first man-made object to travel beyond our solar system and into interstellar space. Data analyzed at a recent meeting of the American Geophysical Union confirms Voyager 1 is more than 11 billion miles from Earth and that the craft will leave the solar system in the coming months or years.

How can they know that? Surely Voyager's radio died long ago. Are they just projecting the trajectory last observed? Maybe our great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren will find it out there in the future.

Nope, it's not dead. It's powered by a nuclear reaction (plutonium I think) and should be functional for several more years.
