Today Ken Kutaragi celebrates his 61st birthday. What global electronics phenomenon is Kutaragi considered the father of?

Answer: The PlayStation

Kutaragi developed the PlayStation as part of a collaborative effort between Sony and Nintendo in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The PlayStation was originally created as a CD-ROM accessory for the Super Nintendo game console. The device was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991. However, a day after the announcement, Nintendo backed out of the deal. Following the dissolution of the partnership, Kutaragi and Sony transformed the PlayStation into a standalone video game console, which launched in 1995 and went on to sell 102 million units. In addition, PlayStation is credited with moving home video games from being cartridge-based to disc-based.
