The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) announces an education day on Internet safety and security on Oct. 11, 2007. The day's events, to be held at The San Jose Museum of Art, kick off a multi- city, localized effort to promote National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), and to provide Internet users with cyber safety tips, educational presentations on the dangers of lax computer security.
"San Jose is the logical choice to be the first city on our local NCSAM tour," said Ron Teixeira, executive director, NCSA. "The city is not only a global technology hub, but also where many of the innovative technologies we use to keep ourselves safe online were developed. It's imperative that we localize the important messages of our national campaign to empower individuals, increase awareness about online safety and security risks at the micro level and affect grassroots change we hope will lead to a much larger shift in thinking."
A national campaign, National Cyber Security Awareness Month is focused on educating the American public, businesses, schools and government agencies about ways to secure their part of cyber space, computers and our nation's critical infrastructure.
In addition to an identity theft demonstration from a top security expert from Symantec, the NCSA and One Economy, through its Digital Connectors program, will provide tips to general Internet users on the precautions to take while online. One Economy's Digital Connectors are young people who live in disadvantaged neighborhoods who receive technology training, including the Internet Safety strategies outlined on One Economy's self-help Web portal, the Beehive. They then provide training and support to promote the adoption of technology in their communities.
