North Carolina Swears in New Chief Information Officer

Eric Boyette has officially been sworn in as the next chief information officer of North Carolina.

Boyette who was appointed as CIO and director of the state Department of Information Technology by Gov. Roy Cooper on April 7 has already been hard at work.

Boyette is a longtime public servant; he previously served as CIO for the state Department of Transportation and as acting commissioner for the Division of Motor Vehicles. Boyette was with the NCDOT for more than 20 years.

When speaking with Government Technology in late May, Boyette explained how he wanted to help install some “common-sense governance” strategies. He identified three issue areas where his focus will be put on: Cybersecurity, procurement and innovation.

While strengthening state systems to protect private data and updating procurement practices, the best way to improve is to form partnerships. Boyette said he sees teamwork as an untapped potential for the state to achieve better overall outcomes.

“I fully believe in partnerships," he said, "because the more expertise we have around the table, the better off the state will be."
