Drones Take Part in Performance Art

The Sorcerer's Apprentice segment of Disney's Fantasia conjures images of Mickey Mouse directing an unruly crew of mops that he has magically brought to life.

In similar whimsical fashion, a video called Sparked, at left, depicts a man sitting at a workbench surrounded by lamps -- that magically come to life and dance around him, made possible by quadcopters.

The video was created by Cirque de Soleil, along with Verity Studios and ETH Zurich, a STEM and management university in Zurich, Switzerland, in the Flying Machine Arena -- a portable space dedicated to autonomous flight.
