In The Lord of the Rings, the hobbits live in hobbit holes, which work with the environment rather than against it. The Earth House Estate Lättenstrasse located in Dietikon, Switzerland, are built just like the hobbit holes -- into the earth, blending into the natural contours instead of set down on top of it.
The Swiss Earth Houses are built on a 43,055-square-foot plot of land, and each home is between 646 square feet and 2,153 square feet. Three houses consist of three rooms; one house has four rooms; one has five rooms; three has six rooms; and one home consists of seven rooms.
The houses all surround a U-shaped hill with a pond and wetland forming the courtyard.
