Jacksonville, Fla., Mulls Saving Text Messages Sent by Employees

Some workers use personal phones to send messages during City Council meetings, and the costs of retrieving and archiving messages from various providers presents financial and technical challenges.

City workers in Jacksonville, Fla., may soon find their text messages archived in a public record. The City Ethics Commission Subcommittee on Transparency and Open Government met Monday, July 9, to discuss the technical barriers of archiving city workers’ texts, reported the Daily Record.

"What you are talking about sounds great, but it's not recoverable in any kind of economical fashion," said subcommittee member Larry Pritchard, who was in favor of the idea but concerned with the complexity of execution.

City officials also are considering how to deal with public use versus private use of text messaging. The subcommittee will bring the issue before the full Ethics Commission at City Hall at 11 a.m. Eastern today.
