NASCIO Looks At Voice over IP and IP Telephony as a Driving Force for Convergence in State Government

This report is intended to provide an understanding of the fundamental issues facing state government as they assess VoIP and IP Telephony implementations

NASCIO announced the release of its new report, VoIP and IP Telephony: Planning for Convergence in State Government.

A product of NASCIO's Infrastructure Subcommittee, this report is intended to provide an understanding of the fundamental issues facing state government as they assess VoIP and IP Telephony implementations.

The report contains a description of the operation and functionality of the legacy PSTN, an explanation of voice transport over the Internet and IP Telephony, a discussion of the issues and drivers associated with the migration from the PSTN to converged voice and data networks in a state government domain and answers to state CIO VoIP questions.

"NASCIO is pleased to offer this report as a valuable resource to assist state CIOs and state technology personnel as they plan for the future of communications convergence in state government. Establishing a clear understanding of VoIP and IP telephony technology at the forefront of states' transition from existing legacy phone systems is the best way to ensure that the transition is seamless and reliable," said John Gillispie, Vice Chair of NASCIO's Interoperability and Integration Committee, and COO of Iowa's Information Technology Enterprise Office.

The 72 page report was released May 4, 2005 in electronic format on NASCIO's Members Only Webpage; and is available for order in hard copy form from NASCIO's public access Web page.
