Every three years, incident commander Rusty Shoultz said, commercial airports must practice their emergency plan. Shoultz said this year's mass casualty scenario involved a regional jet carrying about 70 people that hit a building on the airport property. He said 83 people were "injured" from the crash but everyone made it out just fine.
"The drill went overwhelmingly well," he said.
Firefighters were first on the scene, FoxNews25 reported, and they were forced to battle flames that engulfed a dummy plane, testing the airport's rescue plan.
Staff from the airport's crash crew, the Air National Guard, Gulfport Fire Department, Harrison County Fire Services, AMR, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Life Flight, Gulfport Police Department and the Red Cross all participated in the drill.
