U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey will speak before an audience of nearly 2,000 state legislators and business leaders at the American Legislative Exchange Council's National Forum luncheon at ALEC's 35th Annual Meeting in Chicago on Friday, August 1. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will also be on hand to address ALEC members on Wednesday, July 30 at 11:30 a.m.

This event is just part of ALEC's Annual Meeting held July 30 to August 2 at the Chicago Sheraton Hotel and Towers at 301 East North Water Street.

Other speakers will include Sec. Mary Peters, U.S. Dept. of Transportation; Dr. Bjorn Lomborg, author of Cool It and The Skeptical Environmentalist; The Hon. Dick Armey, Former House of Representatives majority leader; The Hon. George Allen, former U.S. senator from Virginia; Dr. Richard Vedder, distinguished professor of economics at The Ohio University; and Dr. Liam Fox, Conservative MP and Shadow Defence Secretary.

"The annual meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council provides a unique opportunity for legislators from all 50 states to come together to discuss policy solutions collectively along with the private sector," said Arkansas State Senator Steve Faris, ALEC's 2008 national chairman. "ALEC's process of producing principled model legislation is unparalleled among its type," he added.

The special workshops featured at this meeting will cover state budget transparency, energy alternatives, healthcare reform, higher education, elections, employment, tort reform, and climate change.

Most of the business of ALEC occurs in one of its eight Task Forces which include: Health and Human Services, Natural Resources, Education, Tax and Fiscal Policy, Criminal Justice and Homeland Security, Civil Justice, Commerce, Insurance, and Economic Development, and Telecommunications and Information Technology. These Task Forces have considered written and approved hundreds of model bills, offering real policy solutions for the states on a wide range of issues. Each year, state legislatures pass close to 1,000 bills, based at least in part on ALEC Model Legislation, according to a release from the group.
