What new goodie allows police to see if there are people in a building?

Answer: Range-R

Range-R isn’t for thermal imaging -- it's a handheld radar device used by the military (and now police) to pick up movements and breathing within dwellings to see if anyone is home. Some police departments have been using the device for a couple of years now, following testimony of a police officer at a suppression hearing in Denver.

A Range-R costs $6,000 and can penetrate most common building materials, but does not work through metal. In the Denver case, police were monitoring a suspect who was thought to be in violation of parole.
