Waze’s Bluetooth beacons have expanded to what major U.S. city?

Answer: New York City.

The navigation company’s Waze Beacons use Bluetooth tech to keep drivers updated when their GPS signals go out, like in a tunnel. The battery-powered devices run on Eddystone’s beacon technology and can transmit real-time location and navigation data directly to a user’s smartphone.

Waze recently partnered with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the Port Authority of New York and the Port Authority of New Jersey to install the beacons on Manhattan’s bridges and tunnels. Commuters using the Holland Tunnel, Hugh L. Carey (Brooklyn Battery) Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel and Queens-Midtown Tunnel were able to use the beacons through their Waze app as of Tuesday.

Each mile of tunnel requires 42 beacons at a cost of $28.50 each. As a bonus, the technology in the beacons is open sourced, so other navigation services could also use them at no charge.
