What book was finally returned to the New York Public Library more than 55 years late?

Answer: Fire of Francis Xavier

According to officials at the New York Public Library, the copy of Fire of Francis Xavier may be the most overdue library book ever at 55 years late, the Daily News reported.

The book was checked out on April 10, 1958, and when it was finally returned the week of Feb. 4, 2013, it was wrapped in a plain brown envelope with a $100 check for all the late fees tucked inside.

Library officials can’t say who borrowed the book more than five decades ago since their records don’t go back to 1958, and they won't release the name on the check -- though they did say the $100 more than covers any fines.
