How long did it take an autonomous truck to drive from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, Fla.?

Answer: 44 hours.

The autonomous big rig completed the journey with “a bare minimum of human interaction,” according to Embark, the company behind the truck. The trip was broken up over five days and covered a distance of 2,400 miles.

Embark’s self-driving technology was only used while the truck was on the freeway, and there was a human driver present for safety reasons. The company believes that human drivers will still be necessary to get the trucks from the pickup and drop-off locations to the freeway.

The company is already operating its autonomous trucks on a Texas-California freight route, transporting items like refrigerators. According to Embark, this was the first time “an automated truck has driven coast to coast.”
