Embark’s self-driving technology was only used while the truck was on the freeway, and there was a human driver present for safety reasons. The company believes that human drivers will still be necessary to get the trucks from the pickup and drop-off locations to the freeway.
The company is already operating its autonomous trucks on a Texas-California freight route, transporting items like refrigerators. According to Embark, this was the first time “an automated truck has driven coast to coast.”
