Twitter’s latest move to prevent the spread of false news on its platform is to turn to an old, more trusted source for accurate information: local television. The platform will partner with local news channels and stream their live content on its timeline when a tragic event occurs. Clicking on the videos will direct users to another timeline of tweets about what the videos are showing. Twitter recently tested the feature on Feb. 14 during the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Miami, Fla.
“We’re continuing to work on new ways we can surface credible content and relevant information to help people stay informed,” said Kayvon Beykpour, video GM for Twitter, in a statement to Buzzfeed News. “By pairing live video with the conversation on Twitter, there is no faster way to see what's happening in the world.”
