Which of the world’s cities are smartest?

Answer: not London

A new report released by the UK’s Department of Business, Innovation and Skills found that cities in the UK are less advanced than leading smart cities like San Francisco, Amsterdam and Barcelona.

The report estimated that the smart city industry is expected to grow to $400 billion globally by 2020, but that in some UK cities, like London, the technology wasn’t catching on as well as it could.

The study surveyed a sensor-powered smart parking system in London’s West End that had been in operation since 2012. "Our study found that from more than 100 randomly selected people who regularly park their cars in London's West End, 85 percent of them had never or very rarely heard about the service, and 70 percent said they know nothing or very little about the functions and usefulness of it," Alex G.C. Peng, the study's lead researcher, told Phys.org. "In addition, just over 78 percent of respondents said they never or rarely use the app to look for parking availability in the West End.”

Smart parking systems in San Francisco, by contrast, have reduced greenhouse gas emissions and miles traveled by 30 percent, the report stated.
