What industries are Google looking to change next?

Answer: TV advertising and bill payment

In Kansas City, the first city that received Google Fiber connectivity, the Internet giant is starting a new trial with customers -- tracking TV ads. And with its rumored Pony Express service, it hopes people will use their Gmail inbox to receive and pay bills.

The details of Pony Express are outlined in a lengthy document that tech news site Re/code got its hands on. And according to the document, the new service is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter.

Whether Pony Express is a code name or what Google will use if and when it comes to market is unclear. Should it come to market, however, Re/code notes that with such a service, Google could "suck in the type of financial data that would allow it to expand into new businesses. Credit card bills and payment history would be a gateway into industries such as personal finance or lending."

As for Fiber TV, ads will be digitally delivered in real time and "can be matched based on geography, the type of program being shown (eg, sports or news), or viewing history. You can opt out of seeing ads that are based on viewing history from the Fiber TV settings," the company wrote in a product forum on March 20. "If you’re a local business in Kansas City, just as with digital ads, you’ll only pay for ads that have been shown, and can limit the number of times an ad is shown to a given TV."

And just as with digital ads, the advertisers will know exactly how many views their ads receive.
