How many people could benefit from Facebook's proposed laser drones?

Answer: 5 billion

During Facebook's F8 developer conference held in San Francisco last week, the social network revealed plans for its V-shaped, solar-powered laser drone -- that it intends to use to connect billions of people around the world to the Internet.

Though this drone (code named Aquila) has the wingspan of a Boeing 767, which is about 156 feet, it weighs less than a small car, CBS San Francisco reported.

Here are some more details:

  • Aquila can stay airborn for up to three months at a time.
  • The company plans to reach 5 billion currently unserved people by launching more than 1,000 drones.
  • Each drone can beam high-speed data -- via lasers -- from 60,000 to 90,000 feet, to some of the most remote regions of the world.
  • Drone testing is expected this summer.
“We want to serve every person in the world,” said Yael Maguire, head of Facebook’s Connectivity Lab, at the conference. “Can we reach a point where everyone on the planet gets the same message at once? I’m looking forward to that day.”
