What do eye strain and poor googling skills have in common?

Answer: They’re both things that millennials have.

According to one Mashable article, some 68 percent of millennials report suffering from symptoms of eye strain. The article recommends taking frequent breaks, and adjusting display color to filter out more harmful short-wave radiation.

Perhaps one of the reasons millennials are spending so much time looking at computer and smartphone screens is that they don’t know what they’re doing. According to a study recently publicized by a Time magazine article, only seven out of 30 surveyed college students knew how to perform a “well-executed” Google search.

“When it comes to finding and evaluating sources in the Internet age, students are downright lousy,” an article in Inside Higher Ed said about the study. “They were basically clueless about the logic underlying how the search engine organizes and displays its results. Consequently the students did not know how to build a search that would return good sources.”

Administrative tasks like googling basic information are important because, for many, those constitute hours of cumulative work. Managers, for instance, spend an average of 15 hours each week on busywork, according to Time, and not knowing to do such tasks efficiently can mean a lot of wasted hours and nothing but pained eyes to show for it.
