How many of New York City’s established buildings could not be constructed today?

Answer: 40 percent

Zoning restrictions would prevent the construction of 40 percent of Manhattan’s buildings as they exist today. Some are too tall, some have too many apartments and some are in areas that exceed allotted commercial usage.

On May 20, The New York Times published an article and interactive visualization tool that allows visitors to explore the buildings that make the city what it is and show how today’s rules wouldn’t allow today’s Big Apple to be recreated.
